2025 Maryland Legislation

On Tuesday May 6, 2025 Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed SB0175 into law. This new legislation (effective 1 June 2025) expands the Flynn-Laird act from 2022 that prohibits the use of the (yellow) non arc-resistant CSST in new installations and adds the prohibition of sale, transfer or distribution of this product with fines for violation. Additionally this bill mandates a study be conducted by the Maryland Department of Labor and the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal to further evaluate the need for additional measures in Maryland.

We are grateful to Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater for championing this legislation as well as the Frederick County Council.

Stricter Standards

In 2017 the International Code Council (ICC), Fire Service Membership Council (FSMC), National Association of State Fire Marshal's (NASFM) and the Lighting Protection Institute (LPI) all recommended more stringent criteria be used for CSST. They recommended adoption of LC1027.

According to the National Weather Service a typical lightning flash is about 300 million Volts and about 30,000 Amps.
